Wellington, FL (February 18, 2000) - Shawna and Vinton Karrasch recently presented a demonstration of their unique On TargetTM Training system, held at the Winter Equestrian Festival showgrounds in Wellington, FL, on Tuesday, February 15, 2000. Stadium Jumping, Inc. made the clinic possible.
Attendees were shown how the On Target system can be used to enhance a horse's manners, teach calmer, safer trailer loading and improve under saddle performances.
Top riders from around the world, in several disciplines, were present. They included dressage competitor Sue Blinks, Ellen Bontje-a member of the Dutch dressage team-and Grand Prix show jumper Schuyler Riley.
The unique, On Target Training system was created by uniting Shawna's experience working for over ten years with marine mammals at Sea World in California, with Vinton's experience in Grand Prix show jumping. The couple combines traditional training methods with reward reinforcement.
Reward reinforcement implies that the trainer presents the horse with a reward to reinforce an action when it is performed correctly. By contrast, traditional training methods utilize removal reinforcement. For example, when riders ask a horse to stop, they typically pull back on the reins, creating pressure on the horse's mouth. When the horse stops or slows, that pressure is removed-hence the term, 'removal reinforcement.'
The Karraschs enhance their training technique with the use of a 'clicker.' The clicker is used as a bridge signal-a cue that bridges the gap between the moment a horse performs correctly and the moment a reward is presented for that action. The couple also uses a 'target' to help teach horses basic skills such as trailer loading and clipping. Both the clicker and targets are available from On Target Training-along with their video "You Can Train Your Horse to Do Anything," published by Trafalgar Square. These items can be ordered via the Web at www.on-target-training.com or by calling On Target Training at 800-638-2090. The video is available at tack shops and retail outlets across the country.
The Karraschs have demonstrated their methods at events throughout the country, including Equitana USA, Equine Affaire, the Bayer/USET Festival of Champions, Fair Hill International and EQWest. Sponsored by Pfizer Animal Health, Purina Mills, Inc., and Jamco Trailers, they are available on a private basis to provide clinics, workshops and lectures for stables and other large groups, such as schools and universities. On Target's next scheduled appearance will be at the Ft. Washington Horse & Pet Expo in Ft. Washington, PA, March 3-5.
